Best van for you

Which van is right for you?

Published on May 19th, 2022 | by Sophie West

When looking for a new van for your business you want to make sure you’re getting the right van, whether that’s a small van, a long wheelbase or even a pick-up truck.

Which van is right for me and my business?

That is entirely up to you. However, before ordering a van you need to understand your payload and load dimensions as this has the biggest impact on the type of van you’ll need.

What types of vans are there?

Different manufacturers have different types of vans. Just like cars, vans come in a variety of different trim levels from basic wheels and unpainted bumpers up to sports models with giant alloys, body trims and silver exhausts, so you can guarantee there is a van that fits your budget and style.

As well as the different trim levels, they come in a variety of sizes too. These are generally categorised into four main areas, which is why it’s important to know your payload as mentioned above. Agility can assist you in understanding your requirements when it comes to this.

Citroen Berlingo

Small vans

These include the Citroen Berlingo and Ford Transit Connect amongst others. As they are a similar size to a small family car they are great for manoeuvrability, however, they offer less in terms of cargo capacity. This being said they do tend to be cheaper to buy or lease and will be more cost-effective to run. These are available in a variety of lengths.

Medium-sized vans

These include the popular Ford Transit Custom, VW Transporter and the Vauxhall Vivaro. You will probably see at least one of these vans daily as they form a large part of the overall British van fleet. They offer a decent cargo capacity and can be specified with up to six seats. You can also still park them with relative ease. With a high driving position, you wouldn’t feel a million miles away from the sort of position you’d get from an SUV. These are available in a variety of lengths.

Large vans

These offer the biggest cargo capacity and like small and medium sized vans are available in a variety of lengths. However, these offer the longest type of light commercial vehicle available. These vans include the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit. If you have a standard UK driver’s licence you can drive up to a 3.5t vehicle.

Pickup trucks

Two of the most popular pickup trucks you’ll see in the UK are Ford’s Ranger and Toyota’s Hilux. The UK market used to have an influx of pickup trucks from different manufacturers, but they have seemed to have pulled out of the UK market over the years.

Vehicle conversions

Sometimes off the shelf commercial vehicle isn’t fit for purpose. All the above can be kitted out to be bespoke for the required purpose. This can include roof-mounted beacons all the way up to a complete conversion. Agility Fleet offers a tailored service to help you design and produce any bespoke vehicle you require.

Different fuel types

Just like your modern car, vans tend to come with a variety of different fuel types. These vary from your standard petrol or diesel internal combustion engine (ICE), to plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and fully electric (EV).
